Setting the Stage for Creative Writing: Plot Scaffolds for Beginning and Intermediate Writers
O'Day, Shannon
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Standardized writing tests focus more on content than mechanics, but writing instruction typically focuses more on mechanics than content. Plot scaffolds, can help teachers fix the balance and help foster creativity and originality in students' writing. In this practical guide, elementary and middle school teachers will find: (1) a research-based rationale for incorporating plot scaffolds in writing instruction; (2) hands-on lessons for beginning and intermediate writers; and (3) strategies for experienced teachers, as well as for those who are unsure about teaching writing. Appendixes contain a wealth of supplementary material, including learning objectives, evaluation rubrics, and 12 reproducible plot scaffolds that can be used right away or adapt to meet students' needs. A glossary highlights important terms used throughout the book. Following a preface, this book is divided into the following chapters: (1) How Plot Scaffolds Work; (2) Plot Scaffolds for Beginning Writers; (3) Plot Scaffolds for Intermediate Writers; and (4) Building on the Plot Scaffold Strategy. A conclusion is also presented. Appended are: (1) Plot Scaffold Learning Objectives and Rubrics; (2) Plot Scaffolds; (3) The Guinea Pig Paper Model; and (4) Teacher Handouts for Writing Mentor Program. A list of references; and an index are also included.
