Gamers Go to College
Westman, Craig; Bouman, Penny
American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)
This book was written both to examine and reveal the Gamer generation as a popular culture trend that has been two plus decades in the making and shaping. And, it is a generation that is now entering college--Gen G. This book explores how the Gamer generation is less a subset of the Millennial generation, but rather a unique generation unto itself. In fact, the authors will argue, Gamers are inherently trans generational. That is, Gamers move through the generational shifting currents within popular culture and transcend or subvert each. With the advent of the first home console video game, "Pong," in the late 1970s, the Gamer generation consisted of the tail-end of the Baby Boomer's (1943-1960) who were then in their late teens or early twenties. It then navigated through the shifting generational cultural currents of Gen X, Gen Y, and the present Millennials. Following a prologue and introduction, this book is divided into seven chapters: (1) The Financial Impact of Gamers on Higher Education; (2) Gamers: Characteristics, Skills and How They Learn; (3) A Case Study; (4) What Do Video Games Teach Us about Gamers?; (5) Video Games and the Experience Economy; (6) Higher Education Got Game?; and the final chapter, (7) Game Over. Appended are: (1) "Those Darn Kids and Their Darn New Technology: How New Media Keeps Corrupting Our Children" (Tom Standage); (2) The Entertainment Software Association (ESA); (3) "ph33r the Girl Gamer" (Rachel Lee Cherry); and (4) "Boy's Beloved Blanket." The book concludes with a glossary; and list of references.
