The Kindness of Strangers: Philanthropy and Higher Education
Elliott, Deni
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
In this book, Deni Elliott examines ethically questionable situations that have arisen in response to institutional dependency on external benefactors. Major concerns analyzed include: The increased professionalism of fund raising and of donating, an increased willingness of institutions to cater to the demands of donors, creation of dual roles for faculty, students and staff when they are fund raisers and donors in addition to playing their primary roles in higher education, business-university research partnerships that put business values in conflict of academic values and mission, commercialization of student athletics, and endowment use and investment. Supplemented by a series of carefully selected articles, This book needs to be read by anyone who is concerned by higher education's increasing dependency on corporate and individual donors. The book is divided into two parts: Part I, and the following chapters: (1) Introduction; (2) The New Landscape of Higher Education Funding; (3) Analyzing Solicitation, Gifts and Donor Requests; (4) The Business of Giving and Getting; (5) What Donors Want; (6) What Corporations Buy; (7) Recipients as Givers; and (8) Conclusion. Part II, Selected Readings, and the following chapters: (9) Conceptions of Ethics in Educational Administration (Lynn G. Beck, Joseph Murphy); (10) The Ethics and Values of Fund Raising (Robert L. Payton); (11) Toward a Theory of Fund Raising in Higher Education (W. Bruce Cook, William F. Lasher); (12) Justice and Charity (Allen Buchanan); (13) Against Philanthropy: Individual and Corporate (Neil Levy); (14) CASE Code of Ethics; and (15) CASE Donor's Bill of Rights.
