Adolescents Talk about Reading: Exploring Resistance to and Engagement with Text
Reeves, Anne R.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Why do adolescents happily read some texts but fiercely resist reading others? Why do some teens read widely while others almost never read? This book shows how to find answer these questions--and more--by observing adolescents complex relationships with reading and letting them explain why they resist or engage with text. Author Anne Reeves conducted a study to understand what goes on in adolescents minds as they look at text. She presents case studies of five high school students whose stories represent adolescents relationships with reading. Teachers will want to use this reader-friendly resource to see more clearly students reasons for resisting or engaging with reading-and to maximize their chances for reading success. Following a preface, this book presents the following chapters: (1) "Investigating Adolescent Readers"; (2) "Investigating the Reading Process"; (3) "Sting: 'I Stopped Bein' a Good Little Boy'"; (4) "Duke: Competing Visions of Manhood"; (5) "Rosa: Fiction as Therapy"; (6) "Valisha: Finding a Reason to Read"; (7) "Joel: Trying to Focus"; and (8) "Investigating Resistance and Engagement." Appended are: (1) Interview Questions; and (2) Summary of Subject Data. Also included are a list of references and an index.
