The primary purpose of the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL's) Center for Literacy is to improve the reading achievement of all students by providing assistance to schools, districts, education service agencies, and state education agencies in defining and implementing research-based best practices in literacy. The Center for Literacy established the Regional and National Network of Research and Professional Organizations (referred to as the Literacy Research Network) to examine current trends in literacy research on a national level. The topic of the Annual Meeting of the Literacy Research Network, held on November 6-7, 2002, in Naperville, Illinois, was secondary content-area reading.
