Economics in Action: 14 Greatest Hits for Teaching High School Economics.
Lopus, Jane S., Ed.; Willis, Amy M., Ed.
Economics can be the most relevant and stimulating class students take in high school. One way to make this happen is to actively involve students in lessons that demonstrate important economic concepts and economic reasoning. This book contains a compilation of 14 popular lessons (all-time favorites from earlier publications by the National Council on Economic Education) that use a variety of activities to teach economics. The lessons are not intended to stand alone as the course materials. They are recommended as supplements to a good high school economics textbook, as well as to lectures that emphasize content. The lessons contain one or more activities requiring students to do more than passively absorb facts and information. The activity-based approach challenges students to take responsibility for their own learning. Following the "Introduction" and other informational material, 12 lessons are: (1) "Why People Trade"; (2) "Economic Decision Making"; (3) "Using Economic Reasoning to Solve Mysteries"; (4) "Property Rights in a Market Economy"; (5) "Role of Government in a Market Economy"; (6) "Economic Way of Thinking: Three Activities to Demonstrate Marginal Analysis"; (7) "Market in Wheat"; (8) "Productivity"; (9) "Invention Convention"; (10) "Circular Flow of Economic Activity"; (11) "Money and Inflation"; (12) "Fiscal Policy: A Two-Act Play"; (13) "Comparative Advantage and Trade in a Global Economy"; and (14) "Exchange Rates: Money around the World".
