Consulting Adults. NIACE Lifelines in Adult Learning.
Jude, Chris
This document explains how adult and community educators in the United Kingdom can involve adults as equal partners in the provision and delivery of adult learning. The guide profiles many innovative and imaginative ways in which adult and community learning practitioners are engaging with their communities in increasing the demand for adult learning; shaping policy about local provision for adults; and planning, providing, and evaluating learning. The following are among the topics discussed in Sections 1 through 15: the new emphasis on learners and learning; listening to learners and public policies; getting the basics right; working in partnership; using experts; the design and planning stage; the research and consultation stage; resources and costs; and building in sustainability. The following are among the 19 pointers listed in Section 16: (1) be ambitious and willing to take risks because most traditional consultation methods have failed to attract new adult learners; (2) decide from the outset the extent to which you can contribute to consultation outcomes; (3) identify the different people that need to be involved; (4) ensure the "buy-in" of decision makers; (5) seek good practice from other local communities; and (6) ensure that participants are welcomed, valued, heard, and clear about how their contributions will be used. A glossary and lists of eight suggestions for further reading and nine World Wide Web sites are included. (MN)
