A Personal Statement about a Four-Year Curriculum for Heritage and Native Speakers of Spanish Programs.

This document shares a vision for a 4-year curriculum for Heritage Speakers of Spanish (HSS)/Spanish for Native Speakers (SNS), describing a course developed for SNS students within Mercy High School in San Francisco, California. The vision foresees an ever-increasing number of HSS and SNS students completing college level degree programs then joining the ranks of the workforce at an advanced level and becoming a role model in the community. Four sections focus on the following: (1) "Introduction" (introduction to the report, textbooks used at Mercy High School for HSS/SNS, and goals and heritage speakers); (2) "Curriculum" (general considerations, placement and standards, placement exam, five language skills, listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and culture); (3)"Evaluation" (quizzes and tests, interviews, self-evaluation, and grading); and (4) "Curriculum Outline" (speaking skills, listening comprehension skills, reading skills, and writing skills). A Spanish-language appendix presents "Identidad y Superacion." (SM)
