The Power of Protocols: An Educator's Guide to Better Practice. The Series on School Reform.
McDonald, Joseph P.; Mohr, Nancy; Dichter, Alan; McDonald, Elizabeth C.
This book describes nearly 30 protocols or "scripts" for conducting meetings, conversations, and other learning experiences among educators. Chapter 1, "The Basic Ideas," explains the basic ideas underlying the rest of the book, discussing why educators should educate themselves and making the case for exploring student work as crucial to educating themselves. It also discusses what protocols are and why they are needed, and it describes how facilitative leadership can help build a new workplace. Chapter 2, "Facilitating," examines the work of the facilitative leader, offering advice and step-by-step activities for facilitators of protocols and introducing the format used to present the book's protocols. Chapter 3, "Tapping Outside Sources," discusses the crucial role of outside sources in efforts to educate oneself, presenting protocols for exploring texts and drawing advice from experts. Chapter 4, "Working on Problems of Practice," includes protocols commonly used for problem solving, planning, and other kinds of learning on the job. Chapter 5, "Exploring Student Work," presents protocols for many types of exploration, including ones aimed at deeper understanding of particular students, greater awareness of curriculum impact, and sharper awareness of standards guiding teaching and learning. Two appendixes include suggested uses for protocols and additional resources. (Contains 62 references.) (SM)
