Welcoming Children from Sexual-Minority Families into Our Schools. Fastback.
Lamme, Linda Leonard; Lamme, Laurel A.
Based on the view that schools are responsible for providing a safe and supportive setting for all students and that with education the school climate will improve for sexual-minority parents and their children, this booklet provides information on how schools can become more welcoming to all students. Following introductory comments, the book is organized in four sections. Section 1 presents information on the characteristics of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) families, including educators' need to become aware of stereotypes in the language and culture regarding sexual orientation and the necessity of supporting students in any family. Section 2 focuses on sexual-minority families, the community, and the schools. This section describes various family structures, adoption issues, "closeted" and "out" families, the school experiences of children from LGBT homes, and children who are "closeted" in school. Section 3 explores strategies for making the school climate more positive for children in sexual-minority families, focusing on nondiscrimination policies, faculty and staff training, gay-straight alliances, and effective counseling. Section 4 offers suggestions for providing an LGBT-inclusive curriculum, identifying and countering stereotypes of all sorts, challenging heterosexism, and connecting curriculum to resources. The booklet concludes with a list of 32 print, 16 online, and 13 website resources. (KB)
