Student-Led Crime Prevention: A Real Resource with Powerful Promise.
Singh, David
Student-led crime prevention programs are becoming increasingly popular in elementary, middle, and high schools. These programs give young people the opportunity to take the lead in making their schools safer and to work collaboratively with adults. Proponents of such programs assert that they make schools and surrounding communities safer and strengthen social bonds among students. This manual provides models and variations of student-led crime prevention programs and describes key steps for implementing such programs in schools. The first part of the manual lays the philosophical groundwork for student-led crime prevention. It describes what student-led crime prevention is, why it is important, why such programs are needed, the benefits of the programs, and the key principles that underlie their effectiveness. The second part of the manual provides assistance in implementing student-led crime prevention programs. It explains the role of students, administrators, teachers, parents, and the community; provides examples of activities for students; offers points to consider when implementing a program, including recruiting local resources; discusses challenges to implementing a program; and describes four successful model programs. The manual also contains an extensive list of resources and 21 references in endnotes. (WFA)
