An Examination of Factors Associated with the Successful Institutional Hiring of Hispanic Faculty in Texas Community Colleges.
Martinez, Santos, Jr.
This study identifies factors associated with the successful hiring of Hispanic faculty in Texas. It focuses on institutional, environmental, and recruitment factors in its examination of hiring patterns in Texas community colleges, where Hispanics continue to be severely underrepresented among faculty. College administrators and Hispanic faculty were surveyed to obtain information related to their perception of recruiting and hiring practices at their respective institutions. Six hundred surveys were mailed, and 226 responses were received, for a response rate of 38%. Since Hispanics comprised 30% of the general Texas population in 1998, this figure was used as the measure of success; colleges with Hispanic faculty representation of 30% or greater were considered successful. The 1998 Status Report prepared by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board documented only 10% Hispanic representation among community college faculty in Texas. The project addressed nine research questions, which include: (1) What is the effect of institutional factors; (2) What is the effect of environmental factors; and (3) What is the effect of recruitment factors on the successful institutional hiring of Hispanic faculty? Research instrument appended. (Contains 28 tables and 99 references.) (NB)
