Curriculum Integration in Context: An Exploration of How Structures and Circumstances Affect Design and Implementation.
Johnson, Amy Bell; Charner, Ivan; White, Robin
In order to obtain firsthand information about different approaches and strategies for curriculum integration, case studies of curriculum integration models were conducted in seven sites across the United States. It was concluded that the presence or lack of certain contextual factors related to structure and operations had implications for the shape, scope, and quality of curriculum integration. Specific findings included the following: (1) curriculum integration was easiest to attain when the focus was on a single industry, theme, or pathway; (2) curriculum integration was more effective when both academic and vocational instruction occurred at the same site; (3) curriculum integration was challenging for schools that offered career and technical education to students from multiple high schools or districts; (4) effective curriculum integration required innovative, adaptable, risk-taking leadership; and (5) in addition to a deep financial investment, sites relied on in-kind contributions from key stakeholders. (Approximately one third of this document consists of profiles of the seven sites: Apex High School, Academy of Information Technology; Michael E. DeBakey High School for the Health Professions; East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program Technical Center; Hilltop High School Travel-and-Tourism Academy; Johnson County High School, Agriculture Program; Lansing Area Manufacturing Partnership; and Phoenix Union High School District. In addition, there are six definitional essays as well as key structural and operational features found among the participating schools. The bibliography lists nine references. Appended are the interview guide and eight footnotes.) (AJ)
