Research was conducted to find out the following: (1) whether welfare recipients with impairments (or their able-bodied parents, if they are children) were as likely to exit Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) as are their counterparts without impairments, and 2) the sources of income reported by leavers with and without impairments. Data derived from the Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation, including interviews relating to disabilities. Forty-four percent of TANF recipients reported having at least one impairment, caring for an impaired child, or both, as compared to only 15 percent of the non-TANF population. Although impairments affect exits, other factors, such as family support, personal motivation, and local TANF policy, may also affect whether recipients exit TANF. After leaving TANF, people with impairments were one-third as likely to be employed than those without impairments and more likely to receive federal supports such as food stamps, and Supplemental Security Income.
