Designed to assist audiologists in the educational setting in responding to frequently asked questions concerning audiological auditory processing disorder (APD) evaluations, this paper addresses: (1) auditory processes; (2) auditory processing skills; (3) characteristics of auditory processing disorders; (4) causes of auditory overload; (5) why audiological APD evaluations should be conducted; (6) factors to consider when a students has been referred for an audiological APD evaluation; (7) the difference between APD and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; (8) the difference between APD and learning disabilities; (9) audiological APD screening tests; (10) the protocol for a comprehensive diagnostic audiological APD evaluation; (11) criteria for identifying an educationally significant APD; (12) recommended reevaluation for a student identified with APD; (13) factors to consider in developing a management plan for students with APD; (14) the role for the audiologist in managing students with APD; (15) sources of funding for assistive listening devices; and (16) management approaches and strategies that may be used with students with an APD. Appendices include a summary of audiological tests of auditory processing, sample forms for use in the evaluation and management of APD, and information on APD for professionals and parents.
