Discovering Florida through Literature.
Knowles, Liz; Smith, Martha
Noting that a student's study of a state becomes more meaningful when children's and young adult literature is used as an enhancement, this book offers Florida-related works of literature to broaden the study of the state. The book is organized by category: history, historical fiction, biographies, plants, animals, fiction, geography, and travel. Each chapter includes sample discussion questions; a writing connection; a content area connection; a strategy/activity; annotated titles; a bibliography of additional titles; and related web sites. The book begins with core ideas--content-area reading connections, writing connections, reading workshop, literature circles, book clubs, and ways to promote reading--that show concrete ways of using literature effectively in the classroom. Includes an additional list of 23 annotated references; 12 additional titles; 2 suggested bookstores specializing in Florida titles; 23 Florida videos; 2 Florida magazines and newspapers; and 9 additional websites.
