Research-Based Principles for Adult Basic Education Reading Instruction.
Kruidenier, John
This report presents results from an analysis of the adult basic education (ABE) reading instruction research base, focusing on principles derived from the research and a future research agenda. After an introduction, Chapter 2 presents methods used to select and evaluate research related to ABE reading instruction. Chapter 3 serves as an index to the ABE and K-12 reading instruction research findings that appear in Chapters 4-9. Chapters 4-8 focus on these major aspects of reading instruction: assessing students to describe their reading "profiles" or overall reading ability; alphabetics instruction; fluency instruction; vocabulary instruction; and reading comprehension. Computer technology is covered in Chapter 9. Each chapter presents these items: (1) a description of the major aspect of reading covered, including a definition and rationale and, when appropriate, assessment; (2) major questions related to ABE reading instruction associated with specific topics of interest to ABE practitioners; (3) answers to questions in the form of emerging principles or trends when research addressed the questions; (4) summary of the research related to each principle or trend; and (5) ideas (and comments) for ABE reading instruction derived from K-12 reading instruction research. Chapter 10 summarizes important findings and presents an agenda for future research. Appendixes include 25 background references and 71 study references. (YLB)
