Year 7 Sentence Level Bank. Key Stage 3: National Strategy.
Department for Education and Employment, London (England).
This booklet provides information and teaching strategies to support the teaching of sentence level work in Year 7 (England). Focus in the booklet is on using the sentence level objectives in the context of shared writing, and the emphasis is on putting knowledge and language to use, rather than treating it in isolation. Care has been taken to explore sentence construction in reading, and to demonstrate the conventions of sentence level grammar. These are then carried forward into the context of writing, when others skills and considerations are in play. The booklet suggests the following teaching sequence to launch "Year 7 Sentence Level Bank": (1) Explore the objective; (2) Define the conventions; (3) Demonstrate the writing; (4) Share the composition; and (5) Scaffold the first attempts. The booklet is divided into these broad sections: Introduction; Sentence Construction and Punctuation; Paragraphing and Cohesion; Stylistic Conventions of Non-Fiction; and Standard English and Language Variation.
