Raising Standards in Middle Schools.
Department for Education and Skills, London (England).
This management guide is intended to help headteachers and senior leaders in middle schools (8- to 13-year-old pupils) in England to manage the National Literacy, Numeracy, and Key Stage 3 Strategies in ways that are practical and coherent. It brings together guidance issued separately by the three strategies, and focuses mainly on English and mathematics. The guide has the following 10 sections: (1) Background: the National Strategies; (2) the approach to teaching and learning; (3) managing implementation; (4) monitoring the Strategies; (5) allocating curricular time; (6) using data; (7) supporting school transfer; (8) organizing intervention programs; (9) provision for able pupils; and (10) summary and points for action. Throughout the guide, there are examples of how middle schools have successfully managed their implementation of the Strategies. (PM)
