The California Child Care Portfolio, 2001: A Compilation of Data about Child Care in California, County by County.
California Child Care Resource and Referral Network, San Francisco.
This report compiles standardized data on child care supply and requests for care in California. The report provides county and statewide information based on responses from about 42,000 child care providers and more than 55,000 parents over a 3-month period and on data from state and federal government agencies, including: (1) demographic statistics; (2) county population; (3) children in poverty; (4) children with working parents; (5) average annual cost of full-time infant care; (6) percent of child care requests for different types of care; (7) number of licensed child care facilities and slots with various schedules of care; and (8) percent of income needed to pay for housing and one infant in a licensed center. The report begins with a summary of statewide findings regarding family needs and child care choice, and the work of resource and referral agencies. A new section, "A Day in the Life of Five California Families," describes how child care affects families. The bulk of the report consists of the county profiles, including a discussion of trends in the county and presentation of statistics. Findings indicate that licensed care is still in short supply statewide, infant slots are rare in licensed centers, the combined number of licensed child care slots grew at a slightly higher rate than in previous years, growth is fastest in licensed family child care homes, family child care homes are expanding, few licensed centers/homes offer evening care, the combined costs of housing and child care is a challenge for many, and care for an infant and a preschooler exceeds the cost of rent.
