On-Site Consulting: New York City Writing Project. Models of Inservice. National Writing Project at Work.
Mintz, Nancy; Stein, Alan L.
The National Writing Project (NWP) at Work monograph series describes NWP work, often shared informally or in workshops through the NWP network, and offers detailed chronological accounts for sites interested in adopting and adapting the models. The New York City Writing Project (NYCWP), with over 20 years of inservice experience, has learned that one key to improving teacher practice and student performance in reading and writing across the curriculum is developing stable, long-term professional development relationships with schools. NYCWP now has 17 teachers working as on-site teacher-consultants in six elementary schools, eight middle schools, and 22 high schools spread throughout the five boroughs of New York City. This monograph presents slices of the work done by NYCWP. Following an Introduction (Marcie Wolfe), articles are: "Developing Collaborative Relationships in a School Setting: Taking an Inquiry Stance in Professional Development" (Nancy Mintz) and "Whole School Reform: A Collaboration Between a Teacher-Consultant and a Principal" (Alan L. Stein). The first article focuses on a multi-year collaboration with one middle-school teacher to examine more effective ways of supporting students as readers, while the second article presents its author's teacher-consultant work as extending beyond classrooms to a collaboration with teachers and with the principal to develop a new school culture. Includes notes. Appended is a course description. (NKA)
