Using Higher-Order Thinking To Improve Reading Comprehension. A1 [Grades 5-6]. Reading Detective[TM].
Block, Cheryl; Beckwith, Carrie; Hockett, Margaret; White, David
Part of a series, the purpose of this low-readability/high interest book is to use higher order thinking to develop students' reading comprehension skills. The reading skills addressed in the book are based on state reading standards and assessment tests for grades five and six. The goal of the series of books is to teach students how to analyze what they read: students answer questions based on a passage and then provide supporting evidence from the text for their answers. This book contains three types of reading passages: nonfiction articles on a variety of topics in the different content areas; fictional stories in a variety of writing styles; and literature excerpts from award-winning and well-known authors frequently read in schools. After a teacher introduction, sections of the book are: Student Skills Lessons; Pretests; Literature Excerpts and Activity Pages; Fictional Short Stories and Activity Pages; Nonfiction Articles and Activity Pages; and Posttests. Contains answer keys; a 13-item glossary; 9 literature citations; and a sample activity. (PM)
