The United States government's National Reading Panel (NRP) "Put Reading First" report points to phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension as the major building blocks for reading success. This booklet seeks to demonstrate clearly and explicitly how the Harcourt Reading Program, "Trophies," links to the research recommendations of the National Reading Panel. The booklet is organized into major strands which mirror those of the NRP: Phonemic Awareness; Phonics; Fluency; Vocabulary; and Text Comprehension. The booklet's sixth section, discussing Instructional Design, was added to address the elements of a coordinated program and show how all five areas interact to make the overall program successful. To help readers make the connections between the report research recommendations and "Trophies," the following sections are used within each strand: "Put Reading First" Recommendations summarizes key recommendations from the report; Excerpts from the Research That Guided "Trophies" Development provides illustrative examples of the tenets of scientifically-based reading research upon which "Trophies" instruction was built; and From Research to Practice in "Trophies" provides sample instructional references to show how "Trophies" addresses those particular research-based instructional recommendations.
