Spreading the Word: Reaching Out to New Learners. NIACE Lifelines in Adult Learning.
McGivney, Veronica
This guide explains how outreach workers of adult, further, and higher education institutions across the United Kingdom can make their outreach activities more effective at widening participation. The following topics are discussed: (1) the need to encourage all groups to participate in learning; (2) the role of outreach in attracting new and different learners; (3) expanding outreach in the current favorable political climate; (4) different understandings of the term "outreach"; (5) models and approaches; (6) embarking on an outreach strategy; (7) implementing an outreach strategy; (8) making the right contacts; (9) assessing the impact of outreach; and (10) keeping the work going. The final section lists issues and challenges for providers and outreach workers and 10 tips for outreach workers, including the following: (1) get to know key staff members who may be in a position to support your work; (2) arrange to network and meet regularly with other outreach workers in our organization and other organizations working in the same areas; and (3) if you are having trouble getting your employer to respond to identified community learning needs, remind him or her that working with new learner groups can significantly raise your organization's local credibility and profile.
