Outcomes and Completions of New Apprenticeships. Research at a Glance.
National Centre for Vocational Education Research, Leabrook (Australia).; Australian National Training Authority, Brisbane.
This publication provides a synopsis of the issues, as identified in recent research reports, relating to non-completion of New Apprenticeships and Traineeships in Australia. Some of the key findings of the research reports are the following: (1) during the mid-1990s, non-completion rates were approximately 45 percent for trainees and between 23-30 percent for apprenticeships; (2) non-completion of apprenticeships and traineeships is at a level similar to workplace mobility in general; (3) completions among traditional trade occupations are high in comparison to other education sectors and rates of labor turnover; (4) more than half of all non-completers in 2000 were engaged in clerical, sales, and service occupations; (5) employment outcomes for New Apprentices are generally good, whether they complete or not; (6) reasons for non-completion tend to be mostly employment-related, although training issues can also influence the likelihood of completion; and (7) non-completions, poorer outcomes, and unsatisfactory employment and training experiences appear to be concentrated within particular groups and occupational areas. Completers were more likely to be male, younger than 19, working in a metropolitan area, completers of Year 12 education, full time, and speakers of English at home. (Contains 16 references.) (KC)
