TAFE Graduates: Do They Get What They Want from Training? Statistics 2001. At a Glance.
National Centre for Vocational Education Research, Leabrook (Australia).
The question of whether graduates of programs in Australia's technical and further education (TAFE) sector get what they want from training was examined by analyzing data from the 2001 Student Outcomes Survey. The survey collected data on students who completed a full course of study and graduated from a TAFE institute in Australia in 2000. The respondents were divided into the following groups based on their motivation for undertaking training: (1) self-employed (4%); (2) apprentices/trainees (13%); (3) labor market entrants (12%); (4) career changers/reskillers (22%); (5) skill improvers (30%); and (6) further education (19%). Overall, 80% of the TAFE graduates reported that they had wholly or partly achieved their main reason for undertaking a TAFE course. The employment rate among apprentices/trainees and labor market entrants increased from 51% in work before TAFE training to 71% in work afterward. Apprentices/trainees, self-employed individuals, skill improvers, and further education graduates were most likely to have wholly or partly achieved their main reason for undertaking vocational education and training. Approximately 90% of students in the skill improvers group were employed before and after their TAFE training. Approximately half of the career changers/reskillers changed occupations or moved into a different industry after completing their TAFE course. (MN)
