Blueprint for Change: Research on Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Report of the National Advisory Mental Health Council's Workgroup on Child and Adolescent Mental Health Intervention Development and Deployment.
National Inst. of Mental Health (DHHS), Bethesda, MD.
Findings from research in neurobiology, genetics, behavioral science, and social science have led to an increased understanding of the complex interactions among genetic and socioenvironmental factors and their contribution to child and adolescent mental disorders. Although scientifically proven interventions are available, the gap between research and practice continues to widen. Interventions often fail to take into account the sociocultural context in which they will be implemented. Part of closing the gap entails investigating the best methods for deploying evidence-based approaches to real-world settings. This report specifically focuses on child and adolescent mental health intervention development and deployment. It begins with a review of child and adolescent mental health intervention research. It includes recent activities concerning the environment surrounding child mental health and the guiding principles and conceptual model for the report. Section 2 looks at current and future prospects for child and adolescent intervention research. National estimates are considered for costs, financing policy, and services utilization. Key scientific areas for research are reviewed such as, neuroscience, behavioral science, prevention, psychosocial interventions, and psychopharmacology. Service effectiveness and system improvements are described. Section 3 discusses infrastructure and training and Section 4 considers future directions for child and adolescent mental health research. Appendixes include: National Estimates of Mental Health Utilization and Expenditures for Children in 1998; Clinical Case Study: Childhood-Onset Depression; Respondents, Training Recommendations from Major Professional Associations; and National Advisory Mental Health Council Member list.
