Expanding Map Skills from the Neighborhood to the World. Grade 2 Model Lesson for Standard 2. California History-Social Science Course Models.
Renfrew, Melanie; Porter, Priscilla
The concept of location is a first step in spatial thinking, one of the multiple intelligences and an historical and social science analysis skill listed in the California Academic Content Standards for History-Social Science. Based on what they learned in kindergarten and first grade about mapping their classroom and the playground, students learn more about map basics using maps of the school neighborhood, maps that show how land use differs spatially in California (what a California land use map looks like), and maps of the key features of the North American continent. Suggested time for unit implementation is 6 weeks. The unit incorporates the five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and regions. The lesson plan discusses the significance of the topic; lists focus questions; features literacy links; covers materials needed for the lesson; and provides information and student activities, dividing the topic into "Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; and "Culminating the Topic." It suggests assessment activities and offers extended/correlated activities. Lists references and resources for the sample topic. Appended are sample worksheets. (BT)
