This publication presents several articles on teacher development and improvement: "Teacher Development: A Strategy for School Improvement" (barriers to and features of effective teacher development); "Help Wanted: Recruiting and Keeping Quality Teachers" (teacher incentives, beginning teacher induction, teaching conditions, and teacher satisfaction); "What Makes a Good Mentor?" (e.g., being a role model, having interpersonal skills, and being a good listener); "Changing Practice with Collaborative Inquiry" (conducting school-based action research); "Virtual Communities of Learners" (participating in online forums and group listservs in order to share and network with other teachers); "Alternative Routes to Certification" (such programs are making a significant impact on the nation's need for qualified teachers); "Finding What Works in Teaching and Learning" (National Staff Development Council standards for staff development); "Classroom Teachers in Conversation" (the importance of providing teachers time to talk and share); and "Research Review: What is a Teacher Community?"
