Divided by Language: A Study of Participation and Competence in Languages in Great Britain Undertaken by NIACE.
Aldridge, Fiona
A representative sample of 4,000 adults aged 16 and over in all three nations of Great Britain were surveyed regarding the languages they currently speak, their current participation in language learning, and their future language-learning intentions. The following were among the key findings: (1) 29% of adults can speak one foreign language, and 13% can speak two or more; (2) 15% of adults are bilingual; (3) men and women speak equal numbers of languages; (4) social class has a major impact on the number of languages spoken; (5) 45% of Britain's black and minority ethnic communities speak more than two other languages compared to 11% of white adults; (6) only 5% of adults are currently learning a language; (7) participation in language learning is highest among young adults; (8) 44% of adults would like to learn a language if they had the time and opportunity; and (9) French remains the primary foreign language learned in Britain. (Forty tables/figures are included. Twelve recommended publications and World Wide Web sites are listed. The following items are appended: technical information about the survey; notes on the document's tables; a guide to socioeconomic class; a list of study regions; analyses of weighted and unweighted samples; and the questionnaire.)
