The Power To Learn: Stories of Success in the Education of Asian and Other Bilingual Pupils.
Wrigley, Terry
This book describes a study of 10 inner city schools in the United Kingdom which showed how the empathy and imagination of teachers and principals, as well as culturally relevant curricula and stimulating teaching, helped enable bilingual students to achieve. The first part of the book describes the main issues: what counts as achievement for bilingual students, whole-school factors supporting success, effective teaching and learning, English as a Second Language (a focus on achievement), community and culture (an antiracist perspective), misunderstanding school improvement, and the power to learn. The second part of the book presents case studies of these 10 successful schools, highlighting features that led to each school's successes. The third part of the book summarizes the various factors that impacted the schools, including powerful leadership and school development; appropriate curriculum and extracurricular activities; culturally responsive teaching and learning; promotion of maturity and respect among students; community involvement; and commitment to antiracist education. Appended is a guide to schools in England and Scotland for foreign readers. (Contains 30 bibliographic references.) (SM)
