North Carolina Writing Assessment Results, 2000-2001. Measuring Up. E&R Report.
Wake County Public School System, Raleigh, NC. Dept. of Evaluation and Research.
The Writing Assessment, part of the North Carolina End-of-Grade testing program, is required by the State for students in grades 4 and 7. The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) also tested students in grades 5 and 8 who did not receive a score of 2.5 or higher the previous year, but results for those students are not included in this report. Scores on the grade 4 and grade 7 Writing Assessment rose in 2001, both statewide and in the WCPSS. The percentage of students who scored at or above 2.5 was higher than in previous year for both grades, and scores at both grades were higher than the statewide percentage. Fourth-grade scores increased 10.3 percentage points, to 78.1 in 2001, and seventh-grade scores increased 6.6 percentage points to 77.5. Score increased fluctuated with the type of prompt, which was personal narrative for grade 4 in 1997, 1999, and 2001, and imaginative narrative in 1998 and 2000. In 1997 and 2001, the type of writing tested in grade 7 was expository point-of-view. Detailed score reports for both grades and results for elementary and middle schools in the WCPSS are presented in table form. (SLD)
