This 3-lesson unit of study for grades 8-12 and adults considers the 250 million children who spend most of their day on the job, despite efforts to regulate or eliminate the practice of child labor. The unit focuses primarily on export-oriented businesses in the Americas. This focus serves as a starting point to understanding other forms of children's economic exploitation. To stimulate student interest, the unit incorporates various teaching techniques, including videos, role plays, and small-group work. The lessons include learner objectives, concepts, major questions, materials enclosed (handouts and appendices), and materials to obtain. Each lesson outlines a detailed teaching strategy that contains evaluation and assignment suggestions. The first lesson integrates the National Labor Committee video "Zoned for Slavery." The second lesson examines the conflict between corporate social responsibility and "the bottom line" through a role-play exercise about a U.S. athletic clothing firm with a plant in the Dominican Republic.
