School psychologists face the challenge of completing standardized, multiple choice tests for professional development in order to meet the competency standards set by organizations and regulatory agencies. Research has indicted that adequate preparation in test-taking skills can significantly improve attitudes toward test taking and actual performance in many populations. This document includes a discussion on test-taking skills such as familiarity with the characteristics and content of tests, test preparation, test wiseness, and management of test anxiety. Strategies are described on how to develop test taking skills. School psychologists who understand the characteristics of the test and thoroughly learn test content; utilize test preparation strategies; become test wise; and work on ways to manage test anxiety are more likely to improve their chances of doing well, and in so doing, reach their professional goals.
