This document presents materials to assist individuals responsible for coordinating mentor programs at career academies and materials to assist mentors. Section 1, which is addressed to coordinators, contains guidelines pertaining to the following aspects of planning and implementing mentor programs: policies and procedures; budgeting and funding; recruitment; screening; orientation and training; matching criteria; support and retention; termination; student and parent orientation; evaluation; the mentor coordinator's timetable; the matching process; student orientation; and mentor orientation. Section 2 contains the following materials for mentors: a mentor code of ethics; a discussion of the mentor experience; guidelines for maintaining effective mentoring relationships; the relationship developmental process; communication tips; troubleshooting tips; activities; a list of confidence, discipline, and academic skills to help students develop; a self-esteem activity; activities to help students prepare for college; activities for introducing students to the world of college; and suggestions for helping students develop skills needed for college and identify careers of interest. Section 3 is a collection of ideas, activities, invitations, letters, and forms, including seven suggested activities; sample invitational letter to parents; sample mentor-mentee calendar event letter; job shadowing appointment form; sample invitational letter for job forum panelists; and student and mentor surveys.
