The stories of how educators become readers can lead to insights in the teaching process as well as providing enlightenment as to individual identity. One educator has found that writing his autobiography as a reader leads to valuable insights concerning the reading process. The insights gained through writing an autobiography, titled "My Life as a Reader," provide very powerful evidence as to why sharing books aloud with young children is so helpful. A typical answer from a student usually includes something like: "I remember reading 'Leo the Late Bloomer' with my dad..." Writing a reading autobiography is an important part of the educator's reading/language arts education classes. The assignment/autobiographical account must be between 350-750 words and must include descriptions of a teacher who read to the students, parents who influenced the student, etc. The educator shares his own reading autobiography (appended) with his students as a model for format and to tell his story as a reader.
