In multigrade instruction, children of at least a 2-year grade span and diverse ability levels are grouped in a single classroom and share experiences involving intellectual, academic, and social skills. "The Multigrade Classroom" is a seven-book series that provides an overview of current research on multigrade instruction, identifies key issues teachers face in a multigrade setting, and provides a set of resource guides for multigrade teachers. Book 7 discusses peer and cross-age tutoring and ways to develop a student tutoring program in the multigrade elementary classroom. In traditional single-grade classrooms, peer tutoring may occur on an incidental basis when one student seeks help from another. In the multigrade classroom, incidental tutoring is an encouraged and necessary instructional activity. Structured tutoring is even more effective than incidental tutoring. A research review outlines tutoring conditions producing the greatest success, what makes peer and cross-age tutoring effective, the benefits that student tutors derive from tutoring, common problems, and the elements necessary for a successful tutoring program.
