Researchers investigated the influence that perceived choice of music would have on student writing productivity. Participants included 2 fourth-grade classes in Louisa and Madison Counties, Virginia, for a total of 32 students. A survey was used to determine participants' preferences of music. A quasi-experimental design was utilized to investigate whether the number of words written would increase with exposure to preferred music over time. The results were not significant for the participant pool as a whole; however, the Madison population yielded significant results with students writing a greater amount of words in the music conditions. The findings provide partial support for the researchers' expectations and provide evidence for the influence of music on writing productivity. (Contains 10 references and 3 figures of data.
