This annotated bibliography lists publications and World Wide Web sites dealing with health communication and literacy. The 51 publications, which were all published between 1982 and 1998, contain information about and/or for use in the following areas: assessment, assessment tools, elderly adults, empowerment, maternal and child health, patient education, plain language, and plain language materials. The following are among the topics covered within those broad areas: assessment of the reading ability and communication skills of elderly individuals; data collection methods; assessment of the difficulty level of health-related materials; socioeconomic factors affecting patient assessment; drug compliance among elderly individuals; empowerment and community health; patient education related to specific types of cancer, diabetes, and lupus; patient education models; and patient education materials devoted to nutrition. The following are among the materials available at the nine Web sites listed: search engines; links to health- and nutrition-related Web sites whose usability has been rated by practitioners in the field; evaluation instruments for determining the appropriateness of health-related Web sites; resources for literacy practitioners; and health education curricula and materials focused on cancer detection.
