Addressing Community Gang Problems: A Practical Guide. Monograph.
Police Executive Research Forum, Washington, DC.
This monograph provides guidelines for agencies and community groups to develop individualized responses to local gang problems. The manual contains a foundation for understanding the diverse nature of gangs, the problems they pose, and the harm they cause. Two models are presented for addressing gang-related problems. The problem-solving model to be applied to gang problems is often referred to as SARA, for the four steps in the process: scanning, analysis, response, and assessment. The gang-problem triangle is a method of analyzing or developing a deeper understanding of local gang problems and pointing to fruitful avenues of response. The guide contains these chapters: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Defining the Community's Gang(s)"; (3) "Gang Involvement in Drugs and Violence"; (4)"Gang Graffiti"; (5) "Needs Assessments for Gang Problems"; (6) "Addressing Gang Problems through Strategic Planning"; (7) "Civil Remedies for Gang-Related Harm"; and (8) "Evaluating Anti-Gang Efforts." Two appendixes list references and sources for further information. (Contains 51 exhibits and 138 references.) (SLD)
