Enabling Prosecutors To Address Drug, Gang, and Youth Violence. Juvenile Accountability Incentive Block Grants (JAIBG) Program Bulletin.
Gramckow, Heike P.; Tompkins, Elena
This bulletin offers data on recent trends in juvenile violence, juvenile drug offenses, and gang-related juvenile offending, and describes prosecutorial responses to such offenses. Examples of promising prosecutor-led programs combating the illicit use of guns, violence, drugs, and gangs are also provided. These examples provide a range of ideas that prosecutors can use to enhance their own efforts. Prosecutors can play a significant role in reducing and preventing juvenile involvement with drugs and related criminal activities. Several of the responses described in this bulletin deal with educational initiatives, such as firearms education in the schools and drug education programs. The Juvenile Alcohol and Marijuana Diversion Program of Dakota County, Minnesota, is a diversion and prevention program that emphasizes an education/prevention/communication approach with an emphasis on chemical abuse awareness. Project Alliance, Middlesex County, Massachusetts is an example of a collaborative program that addresses problems that plague school communities through training on relevant topics.
