Young Children & Computers.
Hohmann, Charles
Based on the assumption that young children can benefit from a careful, developmentally appropriate introduction to computers, this guide for early childhood teachers and parents is designed to help children aged 3 to 6 years have enjoyable, educational, confidence-building experiences working with computers. Chapter 1 discusses recent developments in the computer industry that have allowed the development of computers suited to young children and presents the questions guiding a study of computers in the High/Scope demonstration preschool classroom. Chapter 2 contains advice about getting started with classroom computers, what equipment and materials to buy, and how to make them accessible to children. Chapter 3 outlines possible uses of the computer throughout a typical day in the preschool or kindergarten classroom. Chapters 4 and 5 describe specific computer programs promoting young children's language development and logical/mathematical thinking. Chapter 6 concludes with a discussion of other significant curriculum issues involved in young children's computer use, including computer-generated artwork, creativity, and computer literacy. The guide's appendix provides a list of software and equipment producers and a glossary of computer-related terms. (KB)
