Si, Se Puede = Yes, It Can Be Done: The Summer Scholars Transfer Institute Collaborating to Promote Access and Achievement.
McGrath, Dennis; Van Buskirk, William
This booklet, issued by the Summer Scholars Transfer Institute (SSTI), encourages collaboration in promoting access and achievement in the education of under-represented students at urban community colleges. SSTI is an eleven-day residential program for community college students held at the University of California, Irvine campus. It is designed to take low-income, predominantly Latino and African-American community college students who, in the past, have rarely continued their education, and prepare them for admission to the University of California system. Now in its fifth year, the program serves approximately 150 students each summer. To be considered for admission students must have a 2.0 GPA, must have taken more than 30 units, and must be eligible for Freshman Composition. Included in this explanatory pamphlet are the following sections: (1) Introduction to SSTI; (2) Voices from the Institute; (3) A Learning Organization; (4) The Students; (5) The Classroom Experience; (6) Role of the Classroom Teacher: Promoting Transformation; (7) Role of the Counselor: Emotional Center of the Classroom; (8) Role of the Teaching Assistant: Bridge between Students and Staff; (9) The Student Experience; (10) Spinoffs and Unintended Consequences; (11) Lessons Learned; and (12) A Note on Method.
