The Postsecondary Symposium on School-to-Work (Chautauqua, New York, May 29-30, 1997). Proceedings.
State Univ. of New York, Albany. Two Year Coll. Development Center.
This document provides the proceedings a Postsecondary Symposium on School-to-Work. Participants were asked to identify and examine issues and offer policy recommendations relative to higher education and School-to-Work (STW), a growing national workforce development reform. The program included keynote presentations from leaders in the STW movement, workshops featuring STW initiatives at the postsecondary level, and a working session to identify a plan of action to increase postsecondary involvement in STW partnerships. The working session generated a set of recommendations for advancing the STW initiative at the postsecondary level that include the following: view education as a community enterprise; operate systems that embrace improvement; revamp the faculty hiring process; survey alumni; increase the connection between work and college; implement a work-based learning requirement; involve employers in education; increase advisory board participation, increase communication on all levels; provide faculty professional development; provide state funding for postsecondary/secondary collaboration and distance learning initiatives; and develop a common articulation system among all institutions. Appendices include the agenda, participant list, and the State University of New York STW committee. (YKH)
