An Exploratory Survey of Digital Libraries on the World Wide Web: Art and Literature of the Early Italian Renaissance.
McKibben, Suzanne J.
This study assessed the ongoing development of digital libraries (DLs) on the World Wide Web. DLs of art and literature were surveyed for selected works from the early Italian Renaissance in order to gain insight into the current trends prevalent throughout the larger population of DLs. The following artists and authors were selected for study: Dante Alighieri, St. Thomas Aquinas, Giovanni Boccaccio, St. Francis of Assisi, Jacopone da Todi, Francesco Petrarch, Cimabue, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Giotto di Bondone, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini. Findings show that all have works located in DLs, yet none have their complete works available. Progress varies according to author/artist, with some works represented in multiple languages. Overall, 495 text files and 233 image files were located. Works located in DLs by type of developer are: academic institution (44%); private organization (15%); individual sponsored by institution (15%); corporate (15%); individual (10%); and museum (5%). Language of sites is: English (85%); Italian (33%); more than one language (31%); and single language (69%). Servers are located as follows: United States (56%); Italy (28%); Australia (8%); France (3%); Germany (3%); and Hungary (3%). Appendices contain lists of digital libraries included in the survey and digital texts/art by author/artist. (Contains 70 references.) (DLS)
