Fall Enrollment in Postsecondary Institutions, 1996. E.D. Tabs.
Barbett, Samuel
This report presents enrollment data for four-year and two-year postsecondary institutions that were eligible for Title IV federal financial aid in 1996. Data were obtained from the 1996 fall enrollment survey. Survey findings are presented in five major sections: (1) characteristics of enrolled students; (2) types of institutions attended; (3) attendance status; (4) changes in enrollment, 1992-96; and (5) enrollment by state. Section 1 includes data for all postsecondary institutions, while Sections 2 through 5 focus on degree-granting institutions. A highlights section identifies key findings such as the following: in 1996, 14.8 million students were enrolled in the nation's 6,404 Title IV-eligible postsecondary institutions; black students comprised 11 percent of undergraduates at degree-granting institutions, but only 7.2 percent of graduate students; among all students, 77.4 percent attended public degree-granting institutions; overall, 59.2 percent of undergraduate students and 42.3 percent of graduate students attended school full-time; and between 1995 and 1996 there was a decline in enrollment at public four-year institutions and an increase in enrollment at public two-year institutions. Detailed statistical tables for degree-granting institutions are presented in the first four appendices. The fifth appendix provides technical notes on study methodology. (DB)
