This Utah Kids Count report examines statewide trends in the well-being of Utah's children. The statistical portrait is based on five general areas of children's well-being: (1) demographics; (2) health; (3) education; (4) safety; and (5) economic security. Key indicators in these five areas include the following: (1) population; (2) poverty; (3) family composition; (4) parents in the work force; (5) prenatal care; (6) infant mortality; (7) immunization rates; (8) low birth weight babies; (9) teenage mothers; (10) school meal program; (11) enrollment; (12) per pupil expenditure; (13) pupils per teacher; (14) dropout rates; (15) test scores; (16) idle teens; (17) child abuse and neglect; (18) teen violent death rates; (19) child death rates; (20) juvenile violent crime arrest rate; (21) divorce rate; (22) family employment program(AFDC); (23) child support data; and (24) licensed child care. Following a brief overview and discussion of the indicators, the first section provides information on the state as a whole. The second section, and bulk of the report, provides profiles for the 29 counties. Comparative data for 1994 and 1995 are provided, as are demographic data for 1990. The report highlights particular concern in the areas of prenatal care, low birth weight babies, dropout rates, and child death rates.
