In March 1989, a new program was started in the middle hills area of Nepal. A community-based child development project entered the community by concentrating first on the children, and starting in one small area, and extending to new village areas in subsequent years. As of March 1993, there were four Village Development Areas participating in such activities as child care (both home- and center-based), functional adult literacy classes, non-formal education for girls, mothers' and fathers' groups, child-to-child education, a women's self-help center, training of primary level school teachers, and installation of water systems. This account of the work of the Community Based Child Development Project of Lamjung District of Nepal is not an evaluation or exhaustive documentation of the work, but a descriptive account of the program and some of its effects on the community, including reflections on the project by community members and project staff.
