This manual is designed for persons who are responsible for implementing career-mentoring programs, especially for middle and junior high school girls, emphasizing nontraditional, high-wage occupations. Such a program is recommended by the School-to-Work Opportunities Act as a connecting activity. The manual is organized in two sections plus appendixes. The first section introduces and defines the concept of mentoring, suggesting implications for career mentoring. It defines mentoring project goals and provides tips for getting started. The second section is a how-to guide for beginning and implementing a mentoring program. Topics covered include the following: (1) planning a career-mentoring program; (2) introducing the business community to the concept of career mentoring; (3) recruiting, screening, and training mentors; (4) coordinating mentor/mentee matching and providing ongoing support; (5) providing ongoing support for mentors and mentees; (6) using the media; and (7) evaluating the program. Appended are selected mentoring models and public relations products and sample forms. An annotated bibliography of career and gender-equity resource information contains the following: 12 career assessment tools, 12 publications on gender equity, 14 gender equity organizations, 8 middle school career publications, 13 career publications for girls, 2 other resources, 7 national organizations, and 6 resource organizations for career information.
