This is the third review of higher education visual and performing arts programs in the state of Florida. The report is based on descriptive and self-evaluative reports and videotapes provided by each of the nine universities in the state system (the University of Florida, Florida State University, Florida A & M University, University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University, the University of West Florida, the University of Central Florida, Florida International University, and the University of North Florida) that offer visual and performing arts degree programs. All nine schools have programs in music and the visual arts; some add theater, dance, and/or movie, television, and recording arts programs. Four of the system-wide recommendations made in the report address the need for more adequate financial support; others include development of a full 4-year curriculum, noting restrictions imposed by the "120 hours" rule; stronger affiliations with community college programs; and national accreditation for all programs. Specific comments are made for each of the programs reviewed. A final consultant's recommendation suggests the importance of on-site visits for evaluations of fine and performing arts programs.
